EBC – European Brain Council
Setting the scene for discussion and raising awareness of
neuroscience research in Europe.
EJN is publishing the 2011 version of
Consensus Document on European Brain Research (European Journal of
Neuroscience, Vol. 33, pp. 768–818, 2011).
The Consensus document on European Brain Research, prepared by
European Brain Council - EBC in collaboration with more than 200
European scientists and patients organizations, contains both
proposals for future research programmes and describes the needs and
achievements of research in Europe.
The document highlights the need for strong basic research in
neuroscience and the development of a strong European platform for
brain research which is needed to address brain diseases,
representing nowadays a societal emergency in European countries.
The present document represents an update to the 2006 Consensus
Document, reflecting changes in research priorities and advances in
brain research that have taken place since 2006.
Multinational and multidisciplinary teams have once again come
together to express their views, not only on what needs to be done,
but also on the current strengths in European research, hoping that
once again the Consensus document could inspire policy makers and
stakeholders in directing funding for research in Europe.

"Access
to Health Care for People with Mental Disorders in Europe".
Annette Hexelschneider, Dipl.-Ing.
Head of Knowledge and Information Management Support Unit of the
European Centre for Social Welfare Policy and Research, has sent us
this April Policy Brief written by Manfred Huber and Kristian
Wahlbeck on the research findings of the of the project HealthQUEST:
"Access to Health Care for People with Mental Disorders in Europe".
Abstract: Poverty and social exclusion continue to be serious
challenges across the European union and for health systems in
member states. People with mental disorders are at high risk of
poverty, stigmatisation and social exclusion. They are also more
likely to face physical health problems and to die prematurely.
There is evidence that they do not receive the general health care
that best responds to their needs. Improved access to general health
care is therefore essential to minimising disadvantage for people
with mental disorders. This policy Brief outlines hurdles of access
to health care for people with mental disorders and discusses
policy implications.
