We are thrilled to start the year with the news of the establishment of the European Parliament Intergroup for Mental Health! This groundbreaking initiative establishes a formal platform for collaboration, advocacy, and strengthens mental health policies across Europe inside the European Parliament. It was our pleasure to support the MEPs in their efforts to make this possible. The Intergroup will amplify the voice of the mental health sector – including patients, ensuring that their needs are recognised and addressed at the EU policy level.
What is a European Parliament Intergroup?
An Intergroup brings together MEPs from various political parties to focus on specific issues. While not formally part of the legislative process, Intergroups can play a crucial role in raising awareness, facilitating dialogue, and advocating for action, offering a space for collaboration across party lines to drive meaningful policy change. They also offer the various stakeholders involved a forum to meet, exchange information and collaborate.
Impact on Mental Health Policies in Europe
The formation of this Intergroup is a major step forward in addressing mental health challenges across the EU. It will facilitate MEPs to work together, gather and share expertise, and push for relevant and adequate mental health policies. This platform will address the full spectrum of mental health, including prevention, improved access to care, reduced stigma, and the integration of mental health into broader health and social policies.
For patient organisations like GAMIAN-Europe, this is an exciting opportunity to amplify our members’ voices and ensure their needs are at the forefront of EU decision-making. We look forward to collaborating with the Intergroup to advance mental health advocacy and care.
