GAMIAN-Europe participated in the ALTHEA Consortium Meeting on 24–25 November 2025 at the European Institute of Oncology IRCCS in Milan. Project partners reviewed progress and discussed future steps for ALTHEA.
The ALTHEA Consortium
The Consortium unites research institutes, clinicians, patient organisations, technology developers and policy experts from across Europe. Each partner contributes its expertise to advance mental-health support for people affected by cancer. The consortium meets regularly to review progress, coordinate work across its various work packages and ensure that scientific, technical and patient-centred perspectives remain aligned. The November meeting in Milan provided an opportunity for partners to share updates, discuss challenges, and plan the next stages of developing ALTHEA’s digital tools for mental health screening and support.
GAMIAN-Europe’s Contribution to the Meeting
Karl Lavó, Senior EU Policy and Projects Officer, represented GAMIAN-Europe and spoke during the session “Representing the Patient Voice: GAMIAN-Europe’s Role in the Project” on 25 November. He outlined the organisation’s contributions across the project and highlighted the importance of embedding lived experience throughout ALTHEA’s development.
Karl explained that GAMIAN-Europe reviews patient-facing documents to improve clarity and accessibility, ensuring they reflect the needs of patients and caregivers. Drawing on its European network, the organisation provides feedback to refine communication materials and make mental health content more meaningful for end-users.
He described GAMIAN-Europe’s role in stakeholder engagement, awareness-raising and communications work. This includes reviewing language, supporting message development and helping translate key content for diverse audiences.

Karl highlighted GAMIAN-Europe’s input into policy-related aspects of the project, ensuring messages reflect the lived experience of those facing mental-health challenges alongside cancer. He noted that the organisation continues to share policy updates through its website, newsletters and social media to support broader visibility.

He concluded by emphasising that strong patient involvement is key to developing digital mental-health solutions that are practical, empathetic and responsive to real needs.
