GAMIAN-Europe Launches New Policy Report for World Suicide Prevention Day 2024

On World Suicide Prevention Day, observed annually on September 10th, GAMIAN-Europe, in collaboration with AGE Platform Europe is proud to release a comprehensive policy report focused on the urgent need to improve mental health services and policies for older adults across Europe.

Despite a general decline in suicide rates across the EU, older people remain disproportionately affected. Our report addresses older adults’ challenges and offers solutions to prevent further loss of life.

The data speaks for itself. In 2021, 51,962 deaths from intentional self-harm were recorded in the EU among adults aged 70 and above, accounting for nearly 1% of all deaths in this age group. As Europe’s population continues to age, with the number of people aged 65 and over expected to increase by 74.4% by 2060, the number of suicides among older adults may rise, even as overall rates decline. Suicide rates remain highest among those over 70, followed by the 45-59 age group, highlighting the particular vulnerability of older people.

The report, launched today, offers an in-depth analysis of the unique factors contributing to the mental health challenges faced by older adults, such as loneliness, depression, and socioeconomic hardships. It also draws attention to the stark differences in suicide rates across European countries, influenced by various social, economic, and health policies.

The report is not just a call to awareness but a call to action. Drawing from successful initiatives across Europe and beyond, it provides evidence-based recommendations for national policymakers. Key proposals include improving healthcare services, increasing funding for mental health programmes, and creating a supportive environment for older adults through legislative reform.

One of the highlights of the report is primary research, which includes insights from focus groups held with mental health professionals, representatives of older adults, and individuals with lived experience of suicide. A supplementary survey offers additional first-hand perspectives, deepening our understanding of the urgent need for action in this area.

As we mark World Suicide Prevention Day 2024, GAMIAN-Europe calls on policymakers, stakeholders, and communities to take action to reduce the risk of suicide among older adults and improve their overall well-being.
