MIGRAINE & MENTAL HEALTH: A CALL FOR INTEGRATED CARE

Duration: 1 year (2024 – 2025)

This year’s project built directly on the findings and recommendations of our 2023–2024 initiative “Migraines and Comorbid Mental Health Conditions.” That project combined survey data, workshops, and expert insights into a comprehensive report, which highlighted the bidirectional relationship between migraine and mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, as well as the significant social and economic costs of this comorbidity.

Participants in the study reported frequent, unpredictable, and debilitating migraine attacks that profoundly affected their daily activities, personal relationships, and mental health. Stigma and discrimination in the workplace and healthcare services were common, and participants often felt misunderstood or that their condition was minimized. The need for more holistic, integrated treatment approaches was highlighted, as addressing both migraine and mental health simultaneously can lead to better outcomes

CALL TO ACTION FOR INTEGRATED MIGRAINE AND MENTAL HEALTH CARE:

  • Improve screening, prevention and treatment
  • Recognise the economic, social and human costs of co-occurring migraine and mental health

  • Investment in research, training and services for holistic & integrated care

OBJECTIVES

  • To build on last year’s research and campaign by raising awareness of the need for integrated care.

  • To provide a platform for clinicians, policymakers, and patients to exchange knowledge and perspectives.

  • To encourage policy action and investment in research addressing migraine and mental health comorbidities.
