From lived experience to better mental health care
For World Mental Health Day 2026, GAMIAN-Europe is highlighting how lived experience can help shape more accessible, coordinated and person-centred mental health care.
Our message is simple:
Lived experience should not only be heard. It should shape care.
This October, we are launching Mind the Gap: A Toolkit for Building Bridges to Accessible Care.
The toolkit was informed by people with lived experience, informal carers and mental health clinicians, alongside research on coordinated care for people with complex and multiple mental health needs.

Mind the Gap: Building Bridges to Accessible Care
Across Europe, people can still face long waiting times, fragmented services and difficulties navigating mental, physical and social care.
Mind the Gap looks at how these barriers can be reduced.
The toolkit highlights the importance of:
- Accessible and personalised care;
- Better coordination between services;
- Peer and community support;
- Shared decision-making;
- Support during waiting times and between appointments;
- Closer integration of mental and physical health care.
