Mental Health and Older People

Mental health matters at every age

As people grow older, they can face unique challenges that affect mental health and wellbeing, from loneliness and loss to changes in physical health, relationships and independence.

Ensuring that older people are heard, included and able to access the right support is essential to supporting mental health and wellbeing in later life. Explore GAMIAN-Europe’s resources below:

Mental health in later life

GAMIAN-Europe’s work with AGE Platform Europe explores factors affecting mental health and suicidality among older people, bringing together research, lived experience and recommendations for better prevention and support.

Person-centred support for complex needs

Mental and physical health needs can overlap, particularly later in life. GAMIAN-Europe’s work on unmet, complex and multiple mental health needs highlights the importance of coordinated, person-centred support that responds to individual circumstances.

Understanding mental health across generations

The GAMIAN-Europe Mental Health Dashboard provides data from across Europe, including insights by age group, helping to show how mental health experiences and outcomes differ throughout the life course.
