On 12th November, the president of GAMIAN-Europe, Péter Kéri, while serving as a board member of the European Brain Council, participated in an important discussion at the European Parliament in Brussels. The focus of the meeting was on neuroscience, research, and the urgent need for increased investment in the study and treatment of brain diseases.
Highlighting the importance of diverse viewpoints, the GAMIAN-Europe president emphasised that the integration of neurobiological, psychosocial, psychological, economic, and policy-related approaches is essential. The argument was made that fostering a multi-stakeholder dialogue is more beneficial than choosing one perspective over another or promoting a single narrative.
The discussion also touched on the detrimental effects of operating in silos, which often leaves patients feeling lost and disconnected from the healthcare system. According to the President, this fragmentation does not serve the individuals we aim to help.
To combat this, the President called for creating collaborative spaces where patients, healthcare providers, researchers, policymakers, and economic decision-makers can all contribute to discussions. The aim is not to determine which perspective is correct but to ensure that all voices are heard in shaping a future where mental health care is inclusive and truly centred on the patient.
This call to action advocates for unity in diversity in how we approach mental health and brain health, acknowledging that every perspective plays a critical role in building effective solutions for everyone.
