GAMIAN-Europe Launches New Report on Patient-centred Solutions to Addressing Unmet, Complex and Multiple Mental Health Needs Project

On 10 December, we launched our new report on the ‘Patient-centred Solutions to Addressing Unmet, Complex, and Multiple Mental Health Needs’ Project. The launch took place on Human Rights Day, reinforcing the message that access to appropriate mental health care is a fundamental human right.

The report brings together lived experience, clinical insight, and research evidence. It highlights where mental health systems across Europe continue to fall short. It also outlines what must change to ensure that people receive care that reflects the full reality of their needs.

Gaps in Care Remain Widespread

The findings show that support often exists, but access does not. Many people face long waiting times, fragmented services, and poor coordination between mental, physical, and social care. As a result, unmet needs remain hidden and untreated.

People with complex mental health needs often experience a lack of psychosocial support, limited community services, and little follow-up care. Many also struggle to manage physical health conditions alongside their mental health. These gaps can delay recovery and reduce quality of life.

What Helps Reduce Unmet Needs

The report shows that unmet needs decrease when care is holistic, person-centred, and coordinated. Integrated services, strong community support, and peer-led approaches play a vital role. Clear communication between professionals also improves continuity of care.

Digital tools can support these efforts by improving information sharing and coordination. However, the report stresses that technology must strengthen human connection, not replace it.

Lived Experience at the Centre

A key message from the report is the importance of lived experience. People with direct experience of mental health challenges must be involved as equal partners in service design, delivery, and evaluation. Their insight is essential for building systems that truly respond to real needs.

A Call for Action with Unmet Needs

This report calls on policymakers, health services, professionals, and communities to work together to close gaps in care. It urges a move away from one-size-fits-all approaches towards support that is personalised, joined-up, and recovery-focused.
