Strengthening European Cooperation
Representatives from GAMIAN-Europe visited Finland in April for a multi-day exchange on mental health advocacy, peer support, and cultural wellbeing. The GAMIAN-Europe delegation included Nigel Olisa, Karl Lavo, Elysie Nguyen, and Erik Van der Eycken. The visit created opportunities to exchange experiences and share good practices. It also encouraged discussions on common mental health challenges across Europe. The programme highlighted the importance of cooperation between patient organisations, community initiatives, and advocacy networks.
Visits to Finnish Mental Health Organisations
During the programme in Helsinki, the delegation visited several Finnish organisations working in mental health and psychosocial support. These included Sosped Foundation, Suomen Klubitalot ry, FinFami Uusimaa, Taiteen Sulattamo ry, Kulttuuripaja Kupla, and Mielenterveyden keskusliitto. The visits gave insight into the Finnish mental health landscape. Discussions focused on peer support, recovery-oriented approaches, family support services, and advocacy work. Participants also explored the role of culture and creativity in promoting wellbeing and social inclusion.
Discussions on Advocacy and Future Collaboration
The programme included workshops and group discussions with Finnish partners. Topics included advocacy within the European Parliament and the wider EU mental health policy environment. Participants also discussed future European projects and opportunities for cooperation. Several discussions focused on reducing stigma and improving access to community-based support. Others highlighted the importance of involving people with lived experience in mental health work and decision-making.
Cultural Wellbeing and Community Support
A key part of the visit focused on cultural wellbeing and community-based support. Visits to Taiteen Sulattamo ry and Kulttuuripaja Kupla showed how creative activities and peer-led initiatives can support recovery and inclusion. The exchange demonstrated how culture and community activities can complement traditional mental health services.
Building Stronger European Networks
The visit reinforced the value of international cooperation in mental health advocacy and support. It helped strengthen connections between European mental health organisations and encouraged future collaboration. GAMIAN-Europe would like to thank all Finnish partners and hosts for the warm welcome, valuable discussions, and inspiring exchange of practices throughout the visit.
