Ursula von der Leyen Announces New EU Initiative on Mental Health.

“”We should take much better care of our, friends, partners and beloved ones”. These were the words stated yesterday at the at the State of the European Union (SOTEU) by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in regarding the EU putting forward a new initiative for mental health. While the details themselves on the matter were relatively generic, she mentioned that there needed mental health services need to be more “accessible, affordable and appropriate”.

While these were the only details that she shared at yesterday’s event, it is a victory for all those such as GAMIAN-Europe who are lobbying and working towards both a European year dedicated to mental health and ultimately a comprehensive EU level strategy for mental health.

With a serious lack of EU initiatives directly aimed at anything related to mental health, this could be the bellwether moment towards mental health policies and relevant actions moving forward.
